I’m reading the new book from Scott Adams, the creator of the “Dilbert” comic book. He’s a bit of an odd duck, which makes his books interesting.
This book says that goals are for losers. Indeed, Adams claims, simply having goals puts you in a position of failure.
I just met another weight loss goal. Pretty exciting, except that I have been failing to meet that goal for months. Now at last I’ve met that goal, so now I am failing to meet my next goal. I will probably be failing to meet that goals for some more months.
Instead, I should just embrace my system (no-decision breakfast and lunch, mindful dinners, no-decision exercise, 8 glasses of water a day…).
I’ve been a goals, sub-goals, next steps kind of time management person all my life. In the past couple of years, I’ve been moving toward habits. I still set goals and work toward them, but I rely on habits to reach those goals.
This is what Adams calls a system.
