You can wind yarn into a ball while driving across country, as long as you’re a passenger. This is Lambspun Organic Cotton, destined to become a baby blanket using their special pattern.

We drove all day, leaving Colorado at 6:00 a.m. and rolling home around 10:30 p.m. or so. We saw many gas stations.

We also saw billboards for YARNS, “the 2nd friendliest store in the universe.” This is apparently a shop in Salina, Kansas. They were closed when we passed or we would have stopped.

They seem to have a couple of websites, including one that gives warnings and this sad little abandoned site at They certainly seem friendly, though it looks as though they haven’t updated in years.

I just wanted to know which store was the friendliest in the universe.

I did a good bit of knitting, read a novel and a half plus a nonfiction book which I insisted on reading bits of out loud, and had further excellent conversation.

Good to be home.
