“Under the Mistletoe” was written by Justin Bieber with Nasri and Adam Messinger.

It’s a fun and catchy little tune. The lyrics include “I’mma” for “I’m going to be” so I figured the part where Bieber sings, apparently, “shoddy with you,” must also be some extra elision. Based on the lyrics printed below, however, it appears to be “shawty,” perhaps short for “shorty,” being used as a pet name.

The song was written in 2011, and the premise is pretty clear: the singer should be playing outdoors or hanging out with his folks, suggesting that he is a child, but he will instead be using mistletoe as an excuse to kiss his little short girlfriend.

It sounds pretty harmless. Bieber has a very nice light tenor, so his recording is a pleasant choice for listening to. The reggae overtones sound just right for Advent, it seems to me. This is certainly singable if you want to sing it while dancing around decorating.

If you dislike Bieber, the song has been covered by someone named Mike O’Phee. He has too much vocal fry for me, but it’s the same song.

Mistletoe

It’s the most beautiful time of the year
Lights fill the streets spreading so much cheer
I should be playing in the winter snow
But I’mma be under the mistletoe
I don’t wanna miss out on the holiday
But I can’t stop staring at your face
I should be playing in the winter snow
But I’mma be under the mistletoe
With you, shawty with you
With you, shawty with you
With you under the mistletoe
Everyone’s gathering around the fire
Chestnuts roasting like a hot July
I should be chilling with my folks, I know
But I’mma be under the mistletoeWord on the street Santa’s coming tonight,
Reindeer’s flying through the sky so high
I should be making a list, I know
But I’mma be under the mistletoe

With you, shawty with you
With you, shawty with you
With you under the mistletoe

With you, shawty with you
With you, shawty with you
With you under the mistletoe

Aye, love, the wise men followed the star
The way I followed my heart
And it led me to a miracle

Aye, love, don’t you buy me nothing
’cause I am feeling one thing, your lips on my lips
That’s a merry, merry Christmas

It’s the most beautiful time of the year
Lights fill the streets spreading so much cheer
I should be playing in the winter snow
But I’mma be under the mistletoe

I don’t wanna miss out on the holiday
But I can’t stop staring at your face
I should be playing in the winter snow
But I’mma be under the mistletoe

With you, shawty with you
With you, shawty with you
With you under the mistletoe

With you, shawty with you
With you, shawty with you
With you, under the mistletoe, under the mistletoe

Kiss me underneath the mistletoe
Show me baby that you love me so-oh-oh
Oh, oh, ohhh

Kiss me underneath the mistletoe,
Show me baby that you love me so-oh-oh
Oh, oh, ohhh

Today I was of course working most of the day. However, I did fit in some human things: lunch with #1 daughter, a delivery of a poinsettia to a church member, some texting with my sons and talking with my husband. Like playing in the snow and hanging out with the folks, these actually are things I should be doing, even though they are not paid work. Maybe COVID-19 will teach me this, or at least convince me of it.
