I woke up just after 3:00 a.m. and couldn’t get back to sleep, so I got up and did some random blog reading in hopes of going back to sleep before time to get up and make my husband’s coffee. Any minute now I will give up and start working.
But I was surprised to learn that there is an epidemic of insomnia among the knitting bloggers. People were blogging about it and everything.
Insomnia — especially the kind where you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t go back to sleep — is an early warning system kind of signal of stress for me. I usually get it before any other signs of stress, including feeling stressed. It is August, now, so it is perfectly reasonable for me to feel stressed.
But how funny that there is a lot of it going around among knitters.
Today is a theoretical day off for me. I have to do the store blog posts for today and tomorrow, though, since I am doing an early workshop tomorrow, and prep for said workshop, and I have choir and stuff.
I may come back and say something more interesting later. Right now I have amphibians on my mind and had better get to work.
I’ve been having trouble staying asleep recently too. Granted I get up, check the clock and pop right back to sleep, but still.
I never have insomnia, even though the standard line is that the older you are, the less sleep you need. I sleep like the proverbial log; if I’m up during the night for any reason, I’m asleep again the instant I lie down. I think it’s because for so many decades of my life I was always up at night with babies; I think I’m just catching up for all those years of never getting remotely enough sleep. Whatever the reason, it’s a blessing. I’m sorry to hear that you have Knitter’s Insomnia.
Insomnia: Vitamin B complex. Make sure you are getting tons of it. I ran out of vitamins, and after a couple of days I was shaky and jittery and totally sleep-deprived. Got my vitamins, and am doing fine now.
insomina – maybe something to do with the full moon? amphibians?
Aye – what is it with us knitters. I think I know what mine is: perimenopause. I’ve been having mini hot flashes and I’m a little irritable, too. And I’m not sleeping. I’ve resigned myself to a few Tylenol PMs through the week. Sigh.
I have that same kind of insomnia. I usually turn on my TV and watch till I notice my lids flutter or my thoughts wander and then switch it off and fall back asleep.
